"There it is." Eljai pointed through the night.

Moonlight sparkled on a large lake far in the distance, and Treyas' shoulders sagged in exhaustion. "How much longer until we reach it?"

Eljai shrugged. "Another four hours or so."

"Four hours? At your pace or mine?"

Eljai caught at his breath. "M'Lord! I'm sorry!"

"Eljai, please," Treyas said with a small smile. "I'm used to it. Most of the people I know have longer strides than me."

"I would bet you're also pretty tired from that magic use earlier," Eljai said. He cast his gaze about, then pointed to a small grove of trees. "We could make camp there."

"Well, I don't know about camp, but I would like a rest," Treyas admitted. He glanced longingly at the lake. Water. Magic. And hopefully his friends. With a sigh, he followed Eljai to the trees.

The boy dropped his pack and took Treyas' from him, then held out his hand as if to assist him into a sitting position. Treyas bit back his grin of amusement and sat down. Eljai joined him and opened his pack.

"Are you hungry?" Eljai asked, pulling out a food sack.

Treyas shrugged and reached for his waterskin. He took a long drink, then looked out across the dark lands. "Eljai, how versed are you on Winze geography?"

"Fairly well," Eljai mumbled around a bit of cold pork. He held out a chunk of the meat to Treyas, who accepted.

"Could you draw me a map then? I'd like to know where we are in relation to Mather." The truth was, he wanted to know how far they were from Herrick's coven, but he wasn't sure about bringing up the subject of Nydiri again. Eljai hadn't seemed that comfortable with it.

"That's easy." Eljai stuffed his last bite in his mouth, wiped his greasy fingers on his pants, and picked up several small rocks. He laid one down. "This is where we are right now. This is Mather." He placed another stone to the north and east of the first.

Treyas sighed. "How far is this?" He gestured at the distance between the two stones.

Eljai paused, eyeing the stones thoughtfully. "On a good horse, moving at a steady pace, I'd say two weeks."

"Two weeks!" Treyas cried. Gods! Two weeks to Mather, and Herrick's coven was much farther north and west. How would he ever find Kyel and Jansson? Another thought plagued him as well. "I remember a river that basically cuts Winze in half. Which side are we on?"

Eljai nodded. "The Madra River. We're on the east side."

Treyas scowled, staring at the rocks. And Herrick's coven was on the west side. He knew that river, too. He had worked magic from it. Wild, desperate magic.

"You seem upset," Eljai said softly. "Is there something I can help with?"

Treyas looked at him. "No. You've done more than enough already. I just have a need to get to the other side of the river, that's all."

Eljai was quiet for a few moments, as he munched absently on an oatbar. Finally, he cocked his head and regarded Treyas questioningly.
